The Iconic Windmills of Lajares
The windmills of Lajares are silent witnesses to Fuerteventura's agricultural history and have been designated as Assets of Cultural Interest. These iconic structures symbolize the island's past as a cereal-producing region. One such mill, with its circular design and four sails, ground 'gofio' (a type of roasted grain flour) until the 1960s and is currently undergoing restoration. Another windmill, known as La Molina, also with a similar number of sails, operated until 1980. Visiting these historic sites provides a fascinating glimpse into the island's agricultural heritage.
